Retina Specialist Austin
Dr. Gowtham Jonna is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in diseases of the retina and vitreous. With an academic scholarship, Gowtham Jonna earned his undergraduate degree from Rutgers University, graduating summa cum laude with multiple awards for excellence in premedical studies. He received his medical degree from the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey – Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where he was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society in junior and senior years. Gowtham developed a strong interest in vitreoretinal diseases as a first-year medical student and has been cultivating that interest through clinical research ever since. Dr. Jonna completed his transitional year internship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City, New York, where he engaged in intensive retinoblastoma research under the guidance of David H. Abramson, M.D. He completed ophthalmology residency training at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York, where he was elected Chief Resident and received the Academic Excellence Award in Ophthalmology.
Dr. Jonna went on to complete a two-year medical and surgical retina fellowship at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, where he was honored with the J. Donald M. Gass M.D. Fellow Award. During their fellowship, he received a National Eye Institute-sponsored travel grant as well as the Vitreoretinal Surgery Foundation Award for his research. Dr. Jonna has accepted a position with the Retina Consultants of Austin to begin in September 2017. He looks forward to providing compassionate, patient-centered care and making positive contributions to Retina Research Center and Dell Medical School.
